She attended most of her school years in Ulysses. Her family returned to Minneola her senior year. Gladys graduated for Minneola High School in 1940. On September 8, 1941, she married J. Dwight Lobdell in Dodge City. He preceded her in death on October 4, 1999. They were lifetime residents of the Dodge City area.
Gladys was the account clerk for the State Highway Commission Department of Tranportation for many years. She was office manager of T.M. Deal Lumber Company for 31 years, retiring in 1987. Gladys loved gardening, lodgework, volunteering, watching sports, especially K.U. basketball, and being with friends and family.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dodge City, Order of Eastern Star St. Bernard Chapter #97, and the RSVP Club both of Dodge City. Gladys served as Past Matron in 1963 and in 1991, Grand Officer of Kansas Order of Eastern Star in 1978. She volunteered at the Fort Dodge VA Medical Center and the Western Plains Hospital Auxillary.
Gladys is survived by two daughters, Theron Hunter and husband Jeff of Tucson, Arizona and Nona Rowton and husband Wes of Benson, Arizona; one brother, Jim Stateler and wife Evelyn of Perryton, Texas; two sisters, Virginia Sidebottom and husband Vic of Dodge City and Joyce Schneidewind of WaKeeney; one granddaughter, Angela Rowton Gonzalez and husband Marcelo of Louisville, Kentucky; two grandsons, W. Scott Rowton and wife Mary of San Angelo, Texas and Daniel Ryder Hunter of Tucson, Arizona; seven great grandchildren; and many cousins, neices, and nephews. In addition to her husband, Dwight, she was preceded in death by twin brothers, Bob Stateler and Ed Stateler and a sister, LaVina Malone.
Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Friday, April 2, 2010 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Lance Carrithers presiding. Burial will follow at Minneola Cemetery in Minneola with Eastern Star graveside rites conducted by St. Bernard Lodge #97. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, April 1, 2010 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Cancer Center of Kansas in care of the funeral home.
