She married Bernard Joseph Gehlhausen on Sept. 15, 1904. She had several children, including daughters Elnora (Oct. 20, 1906) and Amelia (Jan. 8, 1908) and sons Francis Benjamin (March 11, 1910), Ervin B. (also March 11, 1910) and John J. (May 6, 1912). It's unclear what happened to Ervin B. Gehlhausen. A record of his death seems unavailable, but he clearly didn't survive into childhood. Francis died on July 8, 1911 as a toddler with whooping cough.
In 1910, the family lived at 1423 E. Washington Street in Evansville with the kids and Katie's brother, Robert Walsh, who like Ben, was a brakemen on the railroad. By 1920, Ben continued with the railroad and the family rented a home at 1827 E. Delaware Street in Evansville with daughters Elnora and Amelia and son John.
The 1930 Census indicates the family owned a home valued at $6,000 at 700 E. Delaware Street in Evansville with daughters Elnora and Amelia and son John. Ben Gehlhausen worked as a conductor with C&EI Railroad. At some point, he may also have worked for Louisville & Nashville Railroad.
At some point, Amelia moved to Laguna, Calif. Katie's daughter, Elnora, died on April 3, 1936. Amelia served as a mentor to her cousin, Betty Myers, who lived with the Gehlhausens for a time after her father died. Katie and Ben also moved to California and their son, John J., and his wife Charlotte (Dress) Gehlhausen, daughter of a former Evansville mayor, also moved to California, though John and Charlotte returned to Evansville in the late 1940s. Katie died in North Hollywood and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, Calif.
Amelia married Clayton Howard Peirsol in 1949. She served as postmaster in Camino, Calif. Ben died Aug. 28, 1951 in Camino, living with Amelia (Gehlhausen) Peirsol. Amelia had no children. He also is buried at Holy Cross.
Katie's son John was a World War II Army veteran. He owned Red Pig Bar B Q in Evansville for 16 years at Riverside and Fulton Avenue. He and Charlotte had three children, Susan, Elizabeth and John Dress. John D. Gehlhausen never knew his grandmother, but in a 2007 letter, he said his mother said she was "as Irish as Irish can be."
