Josephine was born about two months after her father, John Walsh, died in a firefighting accident, likely explaining her middle name. She went to work early. The 1910 Census indicates she already was working as a binder in a print shop.

On Dec. 27, 1912, she married Carl Farmer. She went on to work for several printing companies through the years serving as a press feeder and binder. In 1920, Josephine and Carl lived on Chandler Avenue in Evansville. Not long after, their marriage broke up. Carl Farmer was granted a divorce in December 1921. Josephine did not show up for the hearing.

Early in 1922, Josephine married George Platz, a World War I veteran. The nieces and nephews called him "Dotty," wrote her niece Betty (Myers) Taft in a 2007 letter. George's plumbing business went under during the Depression, Betty said. He died Aug. 10, 1942 after working for Rosenkranz Realty Co.

Josephine finished her career working for Krieger Ragsdale Printing Company in Evansville. She never had children. Josephine was a member of the Legion of Mary and St. Mary's Catholic Church. She is buried at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville.
