Franklin was born on the Florida Keys. He was the son of James Edwin (Eddie) and Clara Louise Thompson Carey. He survived the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane in the Florida Keys, but lost his father, brother, and many other relatives to the storm. He married Leone Carter on April 11, 1936 in Homestead, Florida. He adopted Leone's young son, Bobbie (Charles Robert Carey)and was forever his Daddy. He was a fisherman and a carpenter. He lived in the Keys, Miami, and Ocala, Florida.
