James Edwin Carey, son of John T. & Amelia Albury Carey of the Bahamas, raised pineapples on Key Largo then moved to Matecumbe where he opened a grocery store on the beach. He was a farmer on the keys - limes, tomatoes, melons. He ran a general store in Islamorada. (His birth date comes from his WWI Draft Registration Card. An alternate source gives his birth date as Apr 03, 1880. His headstone says 1882.)

A note about his name: He was originally James "Edward" Carey (as he signed on his WWI Draft Registration Card), but at some point he used James "Edwin" Carey. However, he was commonly called "Eddie."

He married Clara Louise Thompson in about 1904. They had 8 children.

He died in the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, as did many members of his family. He is buried next to, and shares a headstone with, one of his sons who also died in the hurricane.
