Originally named Bobbie Barr, he changed his last name to Carey when his mother, Leone Carter, married Franklin Carey. He lived on the Florida Keys and Miami in his youth. He survived the 1935 hurricane in the Keys. He graduated from Gordon Military Academy, then Florida State University. He was in the U.S. Air Force when he met Barbara Richard. They married in Louisiana on May 30, 1955. They had four daughters. He had an Insurance and Real Estate company, an Electronics shop, and an Air Conditioning company.
