MRS. DOROTHEA MORAREND.
Mrs. Dorothea Morarend died at the home of her son, Wm. Morarend located a few miles west of Guttenberg, on Thursday, Jan. 22, 1925, her age being 84 years, 10 months and 22 days.
Dorothea Schroeder was born at Mechlenberg, Germany, March 1, 1840, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schroeder. The family came to America in 1854, locating on a farm in Clayton county, Iowa, in the vicinity of Guttenberg, since which time Mrs. Morarend has resided in this vicinity. In 1858 deceased married John Dietrich Morarend, who passed away Jan. 31, 1917, as did also four sons in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Emanual Bittner about 12 years ago. She is survived by four sons and four daughters, Henry, William, August and John of Jefferson township, Mrs. Peter Burr of Stratford, Wis., Mrs. Peter Noack of Jefferson township, Mrs. John Moser and Mrs. Robert Hansel of Mallory township; also by 35 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. The deceased was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church of this city.
Funeral services occurred Sunday afternoon, Jan. 25, 1925, at the home of her son, Wm. Morarend, conducted by Rev. E. Lehne of St. John's church, Guttenberg. Interment at Guttenberg City cemetery.

Dietrich and Dorothea Schroeder Morarend:
John (Dietrich) Morarend b. June 14, 1832, in Hanover, Germany. Dietrich came to the U.S.A. in 1850 settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. Later came to Iowa to Jefferson Twp., Sec. 18, and were farmers there.
He m. Dorothea Schroeder in 1858 in Guttenberg. Dorothea b. March 1, 1840, at Mechlenberg, Germany, to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schroeder. The family came to U.S.A. in 1854 locating on a farm near Guttenberg on Minera Creek.
They were the parents of 13 children: Johann b. 1858, d. 1860; Ida m. Theo. Emanuel Bittner; Fredrich b. 1863, d. 1863; Henry; Wm.; Gustav b. 1868, d. 1870; August; Herman b. 1882, d. 1884; John D.; Clara m. Peter Burr and lived at Stratford, Wis.; Laura m. P. A. Noack; Elizabeth m. John R. Moser; Alvina m. Robert Hansel.
Dietrich and Dorothea retired to Guttenberg for about a year. Then Dietrich went to the home of his son, Henry, near Osterdock where he died Jan. 31, 1917, of old age. The Rev. K. Wm. Grauu of Garnavillo held the service on the farm.
Later Dorothea made her home with son Wm. west of Guttenberg, Ia. She d. Jan. 22, 1925, and services were conducted by Rev. E. Lehne at the Wm. Morarend home. They are buried in city cemetery, Guttenberg.
