Obituary: Daily Tribune of WI Rapid, WI, Thursday, July 27, 1972:
Caylor, former sheriff, dies at age 57
Donald K. Caylor, 57, 4540 Church Ave., a former sheriff of Wood County and a 24-year veteran of the sheriff's department, died early this morning of a heart attack. He suffered the attack at his rural home and was pronounced dead on arrival at Riverview Hospital where he was taken by the WI Rapids ambulance at 3:30 a.m. today. He had been on vacation for the past week. Caylor, who had been an investigator for the department since serving as undersheriff from 1964 to 1966, had been troubled with heart ailments for several years. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, with Rev. Calvin P. Fischer officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park with military rites. Mr. Caylor was born March 7, 1915 at Babcock, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Algon L. Caylor, and was a lifelong resident of Central WI. He married Verna M. Meddaugh at Ft. Smith, Ark., June 8, 1942. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Candace, Milwaukee; his mother, Mrs. Algon L. Caylor, Milwaukee; three brothers, Neil, Ashippun; Foster and Arnold, both of Milwaukee, and a sister, Mrs. Alvin Knuth, Ashippun. Before joining the sheriff's department July 31, 1948, he was employed by Nekoosa Edwards Paper Co., at Port Edwards. He served two terms as sheriff, 1961-1964 and was undersheriff for six years, both before and after serving as sheriff. A World War II veteran, he was a member of James-Knutson Post No. 322 at Babcock and of the local Buckley-Baldwin Post No 2534, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of which he was a past commander. He served as secretary of the WI Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Association while he was sheriff, was a member of the WI Deputy Sheriffs Association, the Wood County Deputy Sheriffs Association, National Sheriffs Association and a member of the local United Commercial Travelers Council. Friends may call at the Wilkinson Chapel from 2 p.m. Friday until 11 a.m. Saturday and at the church from noon until time of services. Memorials may be designated to the Wood County Heart Fund.
