R.W. "Bob" Christiansen, 75, of Camano Island, died Dec. 20, 1996. He was the youngest of seven children of Danish immigrants, Peter and Nielsine Christiansen, and was born May 28, 1921 in Dupree, South Dakota.
Still living are one brother Ejner in Ohio and sisters Margaret and Helen of Seattle.
The family settled inn Rainier, Oregon where he completed schooling. He was proud of his debate skills, and his mastery of Robert's Rules of Order.
In Seattle, 1942, he married Vesper "Beckie" Dorr, There they raised four children: Linda, Joyce, Donald and Steven. Family, church and community were always of utmost importance.
He owned a service station for 17 years until the Seattle freeway claimed the land.
Moving to Camano Island, he co-owned Rocky Point Realty.
His community involvement led to his election as the Camano Island County Commissioner for 11 years. In this capacity, he was instrumental in having regular commissioner meetings at the Camano Annex, as well as adding to these buildings and the construction of the Camano Center. He was proud of the county park and road development and the fact that the budget remained in the "black." During this time, he raised his granddaughter, Karen until his wife's death in 1978.
In 1979, he married Patricia Ann Shaw, and loved his stepchildren as he had his own: Cheryl and Alan, Sandy and Robert, Ed and Susan.
He took great pleasure in travel and antiques and "being there" for family and friends. Though his tenacious spirit and with assistance of hospice volunteers, friends and family, he was able to spend his last year at home, never losing that twinkle in his eye.
In addition to his wife, meaningful friends and children, he leaves grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Bob, Jeremy, Jessica, and Jamie; Brad, Sue and Ashley; Karen and Tom, Kelly, Melissa, Kathleen and Thomas; Steve, Barbara and Jeff, Amanda and Ashley, Joe, and Yvonne; Steve and Guy, Michelle and Karen; Trevor and Shannon.
The example he set for us of responsibility, honesty and integrity, and the love he gave us all, is a most treasured gift.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Dec. 26 in Camano Chapel, with concluding services at Camano Lutheran Cemetery, Camano Island.
Memorials may be made to the Puget Sound Kidney Center, Hospice of Snohomish County, or the Stanwood-Camano Food Bank.
