Edith was the daughter of Sula Mary Southerland and Daniel Grey Murphy. She graduated from Penderlea High School in 1950, attended Montreat College, and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Christian Education from Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA, specializing in kindergarten and children's work. She held positions in churches in Charleston, SC, Huntington, WV, and Raleigh, NC. She later worked with Head Start. Returning to school, she graduated from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, with a Master of Education in Home Economics with a major in Child Development and Family Relations. In 1973 she became an instructor at Wilkes Community College, Wilkesboro, NC, where she taught courses in early childhood education, sociology, and psychology. She remained in this position until her death.
Edith dearly loved her family and friends. Her ready smile. quick wit, and gentle demeanor made each day special for those she held dear.
