Dorothy Batten was the daughter of Sula Southerland and Daniel Grey Murphy. She graduated from Penderlea High School in 1948, and from the James Walker Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. She worked on the nursing staffs of James Walker and New Hanover Memorial Hospitals, and with the Professional Nurses' Registry in Wilmington. She was married to Thomas Marson Batten, and was the mother of Susan Elizabeth Batten Dalton, Helen Anne Batten, and Thomas Marson Batten, Jr.
