Grey Murphy was the son of Daniel Blue and Dora Marshburn Murphy. He was born in Bladen County, NC, and grew up in the Delway community of Sampson County. He was the husband of Sula Southerland Murphy, and the father of Dorothy Ann Murphy Batten, Edith Grey Murphy, Frances Carolyn Murphy Love, and Betty Sue Murphy Klavins. He was one of the original settlers of Penderlea Homesteads, moving to Farm # 134 on Crooked Run Road on January 1, 1936, later combining land with Farm # 121 and moving to the house at 284 Garden Road in 1945. Mr. Murphy was a dedicated member of Potts Memorial Presbyterian Church, serving in many capacities of leadership through the years. He was designated Elder Emeritus on October 16, 1977. He also served as Scout Master with the local Boy Scouts troop, and with the Penderlea School Committee for a number of years. He enjoyed farming, fishing, and hunting. During his later years his greatest enjoyment came with his grandchildren.
