Sue Murphy was the daughter of Jesse David and Mary Ann Wells Southerland. She was born in Duplin County and grew up near the Teacheys community, graduating from Teacheys High School. She was the wife of Daniel Grey Murphy, and the mother of Dorothy Ann Murphy Batten, Edith Grey Murphy, Frances Carolyn Murphy Love, and Betty Sue Murphy Klavins. Mrs. Murphy was one of the original settlers of Penderlea Homesteads, moving to Farm # 134 on Crooked Run Road on January 1, 1936, then to Farm # 121 (284 Garden Road) in 1945. She was a dedicated member of Potts Memorial Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities of leadership through the years. In addition to being a farm wife and mother, she worked for a number of years in the cafeteria of Penderlea School, and as registrar for the Penderlea Precinct of Pender County. In her later years, she found great pleasure in encouraging preservation of the history of the Penderlea community and of Potts Memorial Presbyterian Church.
