Andrew Jackson Busby was the son of John Wisner Busby and Anna Merriman Busby of Carroll County, Ohio.

He first married Sarahann Noric (B. Ohio, d. 1852, Harrison County, Ohio) and had 2 children, Mary Ann/Alameda Busby and John Wesley Busby.

Secondly, in 1856 he married Mary Catherine McKean (b. 1839 Ohio, d. 16 Aug 1887 Montgomery County, Kansas). They had eleven children:
