Son of John Busby III (1774-1853) and his wife Agnes Wisner (1778-1850). He married Anna Merriman April 1826. They had 14 children.

Notes from son Isaac Busby's bio in the "Biographies and portraits of the progressive men of Iowa" :

"Son of John W. and Anna Merriman Busby. The father was of Scotch descent and one of the early members of the family was a prominent physician of Scotland. The mother's family were early settlers of Maryland, having come to this country from England prior to the time of the Revolution. History states that Mrs. John Busby, whose maiden name was Wisner [Isaac's grandmother], was a daughter of a member of the staff of General Washington. [This appears to be unsubstantiated.]"

In gravestone symbolism: Clasped Hands=Farewell to earthly existence. Also unity. Wreath=Victory in death.
