Martin Van Buren Vance was the son of John and Mary Ann (Swagerty) Vance.

He married Jane Ellen Bell, the daughter of James and Caroline (Harrison) Bell, in Washington Co, AR, on January 8, 1855.

Jane died about 1861 during or shortly after giving birth to the twins leaving Martin with: William Henry, James Calvin, Cynthia Caroline Melissa Frances, and twins Jesse Columbus Cisero Haliberta and Mary Matilda Elnerelisa Cordelia Emaline.

Mary died about two years later. Cynthia went to live with her Bell grandparents, James & Caroline. Jesse stayed with his Vance grandparents, John and Mary Ann. William Henry and James Calvin later went to live with Martin when he remarried.

Martin's second marriage was to a widow, Elmira Ellen Marilda (Woodward) Gillian whose husband had been killed during the Civil War. Ellen had four children from this marriage: William Francis, George Washington, David, & Eliza Angeline "Sis."

Martin & Ellen had six children: Andrew, Julia, Hiram Thomas, Minda Elizabeth, Edmon, & Laura.

Martin died on January 6, 1880, less than one year after Will was married. A document filed on January 22, 1880, lists the value of some items in his estate at $241. The appraisal includes some livestock, 1700 lbs. of planted cottonseed, and the remnant of his blacksmith tools.

The family records of Sallie (Vance) Hitchcock, indicate that Martin was buried at Walnut Fork, Arkansas, in Chrisman Cemetery. Over half of the graves are unmarked or have field stone markers. His grave has never been found, so he is probably buried in one of these. This well-kept cemetery is located on land owned by Mr. Bill Beckham, who has taken it upon himself to act as caretaker. The result is a pleasant, well manicured resting place that honors those interred there.
