Mary A. Vance was the daughter of Thomas James and Anna Swaggerty of Benton Co., Arkansas. She was the wife of John Vance and the mother of Thomas, Joseph, Harrison James, Martin Van Buren, Melinda, Pennington, Hannah Elizabeth, Talitha Cumi, Anna Swaggerty, Jasper William, Sarah, Martha Lucinda, and Mary Jane Evaline Vance. Many of her children were born while the family lived in Washington County, Arkansas.
