Mary Caroline Allred was born in Bedford County, Tennessee, December 9, 1824, the daughter of Isaac and Mary Calvert Allred, and a great granddaughter of Lord Baltimore. The Allred family became interested in Mormonism while living in Memphis, Tennessee and decided to join the main body of the church. There were thirteen children in the family, Mary Caroline being the eighth child. Upon their arrival in Nauvoo they met the Egbert family and a close friendship developed. Joseph Egbert and Mary Caroline's friendship soon turned into love and they were married December 6, 1840 in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois.
