Age 91, a lifelong Erie resident, son of the late Edward and Rose Szumski Akus. Walter had worked as a machine operator at G.E. for over 35 years and retired in 1975. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Siebenbuerger Club, and enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Sophie Stefanoski Akus, on April 26, 2003; a sister, Bernice Stuczynski; and three brothers, Edward, Stanley, and Anthony Akus.

Survivors include two sons, Walter J. Akus (Marilyn), of Erie, and Robert Akus of North East; two daughters, Joanne Baron (Ray), of Sun City West, Ariz., and Janice Gardner of Edinboro; a brother, Leon Akus, of Erie; two sisters, Irene Yesko (Joe), and Rose Akus, all of Erie; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
