Rose "Ruth" Akus

"Good and Faithful Servant" Rose Akus, 86, passed away August 21, 2011 at Saint Mary's Home-East. She was born February 9, 1925 in Erie, daughter of the late Edward and Rose (Rozalia Szumski) Akus.

A native of E. 22nd St. and Holy Trinity Parish, she later lived on Briggs Ave. and E. 34th St., before moving to Saint Mary's.

Following high school, Rose was a secretary in the offices of Erie General Electric, retiring in September 1985. Rose dedicated her life to her family and her God. Known as Cio Cia Ruthie to her family, she enjoyed hearing all the news about them, keeping important family announcements for weddings, births, and other happy events. She could recall important dates as if they happened yesterday. Most importantly, she was usually in prayer, with her rosary and novena books nearby. When she was unable to drive in later years, she attended mass at Saint Stanislaus Church with her dear friend, Millie, whom she met on a trip to Medjugorje.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Akus; five brothers, Edward, Stanley, Walter, Anthony, Leon Akus; and a sister, Bernice Stuczynski.

Survivors include a sister, Irene Yesko, and her husband, Joe, of Erie; numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call at the Edward J. Garr Funeral Home, Erie, PA., Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Services will be at the funeral home on Thursday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
