Vada was born in Oklahoma in 1916. She married James Stewart in 1934, but they divorced a year later after having a son, Jerry Wayne. She moved to California where she married Robert Harpman in 1939 and they had three more children, a girl and two boys. After a stint in Arizona when Robert worked for the railroad, they settled in Martinez California where they spent the rest of their lives. Vada was very active in the PTA and Robert was a carpenter.
