Robert Harpman was born in Illinois but ended up in California where his father worked for the railroad. In 1939, he married Vada Gibson Stewart who was divorced with a son and they had three more children, a girl and two boys. After a stint in Arizona when Robert worked for the railroad, they settled in Martinez California where they spent the rest of their lives. Vada was very active in the PTA and Robert was a carpenter.
