1850 United States Federal Census enumerated Joshua Baily as being 15, living with his parents. His father was Jeremiah Baily, age 44, and his mother was Meriam (Brown) Baily, age 44. Their home in 1850 was in Warren County, Illinois. His siblings were William age 19, Eliza age 12, Joseph C. age 10, Frances age 8, Cyrus age 6, and Rachel age 4.

In the 1860 census Joshua was still in his parents’ home aged 24 at the time of the census, and the family then lived in Dillon Township, Tazewell Co., Illinois, where they would remain.

Joshua’s Civil War records show he was a 1st Lieutenant in Company B of the 73rd Illinois Infantry, serving from June 1862 until June of 1865.

After the Civil War was ended Joshua married, Mary Davis on Nov. 2nd, 1865. In the 1870 census we find Joshua, age 35 and his wife Mary age 38. They were living in Tazewell County Illinois. He was farming. Also in the home are their children Elizabeth, born 1867, and William W., born 1869. Living with them were Elizabeth Smith, reported as age 8 and was domestic help, and John Sharr, born in Baden, Germany, age 20, farm help.

In the 1880 census, still in Tazewell County, they had added a child Eliza, born in 1873. They remained in Tazewell County until at least 1880 where the 1880 census found them, but shortly after that they moved to Jasper County, Missouri. Joshua died there in 1883 at age 49 and is buried in Park Cemetery in Carthage, MO.
