Based on census data, Phebe was born about 1829 probably in State Bridge, Oneida County, NY where her parents then lived. According to her daughter, Roseann, Phebe died in or near Beachville, West Oxford Township, Ontario, Canada where they were living at a place called "The Pines." Phebe was alive 25 Jun 1865 when her last child, Ella/Ellen, was born, but had died before Jun 1870 when her husband Thomas D. appeared in the Wayne County, NY census with some of their children. By the 1870 census, Thomas D. had married widow Julia Dunham Wolf and they were living in a combined household. Searches of available death and cemetery records in Oxford County have not revealed exactly when Phebe died or where she was buried.

Phebe is acknowledged in her father William Hyland's will as one of his daughters, but she was left only a token amount. Family tradition has it that the Catholic Hyland family was very displeased that Phebe had married a Protestant. Thomas and Phebe moved to Canada sometime after the 1850 census. Their son Joseph was born there in 1852. In 1854 Thomas D. and his brother Wright contracted to purchase land in Elma, Perth County. However, Wright and Thomas D. and families remained there only briefly. About 1856 the brothers and families moved to Oxford County, Ontario where they both purchased land. Wright left after a couple years, but Phebe and Thomas remained for several more years until she died leaving him with several young children.
