JOSIAH A. HYLAND 1897 Death of an able lawyer, a native of State Bridge
STATE BRIDGE, Nov 26 – Josiah A. Hyland died at the resident of his brother, Michael H. Hyland, at State Bridge at 11 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Hyland was born at State Bridge 58 years ago. He early showed a disposition to obtain an education and, after exhausting the possibilities of the district school, attended his school at State Bridge. From there he entered Whitesboro Seminary, from which he graduated in 1871. From Whitesboro he went to Hamilton College, from which he graduated with honors in 1875. He completed his education at the Columbia Law College of New York and formed a partnership under the name of Hyland & Zabriskey in New York City. This practice was mainly in marine courts. His ability and success gave him prominence and he became noted for his keen perception and upright dealing. One of the notable cases won by him was when acting as counsel for the State of New York against the elevator combine, whose attorney was Gen B. F. Tracey, late Republican candidate for mayor of Greater New York. He also conducted the case of the heirs of Isaac Gilbert of Verona, who was killed at Oneida by the cars of Central road and won for them a substantial amount. Overwork brought on disease of the brain Oct 15, 1894, and soon after he was removed to the home of his brother when he died. Mr. Hyland was never married and his only near and surviving relatives are two brothers, Thomas M and Michael H., who live near State Bridge. The funeral services will be held at the Catholic Church at the Irish Ridge on Saturday at 11 a.m., the Rev. Dean Kelley officiating, and burial will be made at that place.

Roman Citizen Tuesday Nov 3, 1897
JOSIAH A. HYLAND
Josiah A. Hyland, aged 48, a very able lawyer, died at State Bridge last Wednesday. He was a graduate of Hamilton college and Whitesboro seminary. Also the Columbia Law college of New York. He was born at State Bridge where he has two brothers.

Suggested Edit:
Need to note that "Josiah" first appears in the household of William and Margaret Hyland on the 1850 US Census as 2 YO "J. W. Jenkins". In the 1855 NYS Census he is "Josiah W. J. (with ditto marks to indicate Hyland)" before making full transition to "Josiah A. Hyland. Thus, many researchers have concluded that Josiah was ADOPTED by William and Margaret and that he is most likely a grandson of William's - born to a daughter from a relationship that predates his with Margaret. This information might be important for those interested in genetic matching.
