According to her death certificate, her father was Mr Black and her mother was Martha Vandergriff. She married David Sloan Dickson on 4 Sep 1879 in Marshall Co AL. They were the parents of Mary Parlee Dickson Thompson, Ida J Dickson, Artie Dickson Hulsey, Sarah Ann Adaline Dickson Cordell, Ethel M Dickson Brown, John Harrison Dickson, Delma V Dickson Byrd, Dona Idella Dickson Biddle, and Alma Dickson Johnson.

Elvira M Black Johnson appears to be a sister. AL Death & Burial records for Elvira report that her father was Sam Black and her mother was Amanda Vandergriff. Marriage records state that Vira Black married John J Johnson on 3 Dec 1882 at Sloan Dickson's.

She died 11 years to the day after the death of her husband.

Mrs Mattie Dickson, 73, died at her residence in Chattanooga, Wednesday evening.

She is survived by one son, J H Dickson; eight daughters, Mrs Paralee Thompson, Albertville; Mrs Artie Hulsey, Coleman [Cullman]; Mrs Ida Kirby, Fort Payne; Mrs Ethel Brown and Mrs Donie Biddle, Valley Head; Mrs Addie Cordell, Fort Payne, Mrs Delma Bird, Rossville, Ga, and Mrs Alma Johnson, Chattanooga; one sister, Mrs Elvire Johnson.

Funeral services were conducted by the Revs Robert White, Doc White, Willie Kirby and Clifford Crane at the New Home Baptist Church Friday at 2:00 pm. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery. National Funeral Home in charge.
