Prominent New Home Woman Dies Saturday

Mrs Addie Cordell, age 66, wife of Sam Cordell, died at the residence, Valley Head, Rt 2, in the New Home community Saturday night following an illness of one week.

She was a native of Marshall County, but had lived in the New Home community practically all her life. She was a member of the New Home Baptist Church.

Mrs Cordell was known for her fine traits of Christian character and was a fine neighbor and friend to all she knew. She was famous in DeKalb and adjoining counties for her leadership in the Sacred Harp singings. She and her sisters would be on the floor at the same time directing songs from the Sacred Harp book.

Mrs Cordell will be sorely missed, not only in her home community, but over DeKalb and adjoining counties.

She is survived by her husband, Sam Cordell; one brother, Harrison Dickerson [Dickson], Chattanooga; seven sisters, Mrs Delma Byrd, Rossville, Ga, Mrs Alma Johnson, Chattanooga, Mrs Dona Biddgle [Biddle], Mrs Etherl [Ethel] Brown, Valley Head, Mrs Ida Kirby [Kerby], Fort Payne, Mrs Paralee Thompson, Attalla, Mrs Artie Hulbsey [Hulsey], Cullman.

Funeral services will be held (today) Monday at 1:00 pm at New Home Baptist Church, with the Revs Curtis Starnes, Henry Murphy and Robert White officiating. Burial will be in adjoining cemetery with Wilson Funeral Hoe in charge. Pall bearers were: Darwin Dixon, Hoyt and Troy Ott, Richard Brown, Alva Clark, Norman Byrd.
