Excerpt from an article in The Yazoo Valley Democrat (Yazoo City, Mississippi) 17 Oct 1876

I was just the luckiest fellow in the world, in meeting with Mr. J. C. Caruthers at Benton. Mr. C is one of your natural born, reliable and worthy men. He resides on a large and handsome estate in the Swayze neighborhood, has a happy, comfortable, delightful home, a gem of a wife, who is as noble in her womanly graces, as he is in a strong, robust, moral and physical manhood. They have a little fellow under their roof that is the center of attraction, a splendid five months old boy, a laughing, crowing, cooing little Mississippian that his parents have a perfect right to be gloriously proud of. I accompanied Mr. Caruthers from Benton to his home, after the speaking was over, reaching the latter place in time for an enjoyable supper, such as a Southern planter is famous for spreading before his guests.
