Notes:
Samuel M. Sloat, 72, a resident of Elkhart county since the age of five, died at 2:40 this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter C. (Laura) Geyer, 237 Garfield avenue. He never fully recovered from a stroke of apoplexy suffered late in December, and was bedfast the last two months. Born near Canton, Ohio, Nov.. 30, 1861, he was brought to Elkhart county in 1866 by his parents, Isaac and Catherine (Essig) Sloat, who settled on a farm in Jefferson township a few miles north of Goshen. Later the family moved to a farm just southwest of Elkhart, and Mr. Sloat spent most of his life in that section, occupying a farm adjoining Oakland avenue, three miles south of Elkhart, for many years before coming to Elkhart five years ago. His marriage to Maggie Rhoades took place July 27, 1884. She died July 1, 1922.

Samuel Sloat married once more after Maggie Belle?s death in 1922. An article published in the Elkhart Truth lists a Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Sloat as attending the 50th wedding anniversary celebration of George & Mary Sweitzer. I was told my grandfather was never very fond of his step-mother and thus I never found out any information on her. I need to examine Elkhart County Marriage Records for 1923 - 1925 to find this information.
An obituary notice for Maggie Belle Rhodes was never found in any of the area newspapers. I believe this was in part due to Maggie dying and being buried over the July 4th holiday.
Samuel Sloat owned several homes in the Elkhart Area. The first home I know of was located several miles outside Elkhart on Oakland Avenue. This home still stands as of October 1999. Samuel then moved into a home at 613 W Garfield in Elkhart. I have pictures showing the move from the home on Oakland to the one on Garfield.
Sometime in the late 1920?s, Samuel and his second wife moved to a home across town. My grandparents Robert Q. & Grace M. (Cook) Sloat then moved into the home at 613 W Garfield. This home was not officially sold to my grandparents until after Samuel's death in 1934. The home was part of the estate which grandfather purchased from Perry Sloat & Laura (Sloat) Geyer for a $1 each. A copy of this transaction remains in the family today.
