Manias "Jake" Sloat, 78, who became well know during the 18 years he served as motorman on the Elkhart trolley system before his retirement more than 10 years ago, died last midnight at his home 237 Hickory street. He had been ill for three weeks from intestinal flu.
Born April 2, 1859, in Stark County, Ohio, he was brought to a Jefferson township farm on Pine Creek when a child by his parents, Isaac and Catherine (Essig) Sloat. His marriage to Amanda Thornton of west of Elkhart took place March 18, 1886. They lived on a farm south of Elkhart prior to coming to Elkhart, which remained their home, 35 years ago.
