WELLS - Hope Fenderson Hobbs, 64, a retired teacher and restaurateur, formerly of Portland, died Tuesday at her 55 Atlantic Ave. home after a long battle with cancer.
Mrs. Hobbs lived at Wells Beach for the past several years and before that on Woodfield Road in Portland.
In the early 1960's, she taught elementary school for five years in School Administrative District 56, covering Alfred, Waterboro and other York County towns.
"She was my teacher on the day Kennedy was shot," said her son Daniel Hobbs. "It was a complete coincidence. She was substituting for our seventh grade class at Alfred Grammar. All of a sudden the school was closed and there I was with my mom all alone."
Later, Mrs Hobbs and her family moved to Portland, where she took a job teaching third grade at Baxter School on Ocean Avenue, retiring in the early 1980's after 17 years.
"She was a very dedicated teacher." said her husband, William K. Hobbs. "One of the things she enjoyed was when her kids would graduate with honors or do well in life."
During her retirement, Mrs. Hobbs and her husband went into the restaurant business. For four years they owned and operated the King William Restaurant in a 1735 house on Route 1 that they renovated. She also managed Billy's Chowder House on Mile Road at Wells Beach for more than 12 years until her illness, retiring in October 1990.
"The success of the restaurant was due to her personality," said William M. Hobbs, her son and the former owner of the chowder house. "She was very outgoing. Some of the chowder recipes were hers, but she was basically head hostess and was in charge of the office and the money."
"Hope was the most friendly person you could ever meet," said Shirley Griffin, a friend. "She was so good to everyone that came in."
Born in Boston, a daughter of Robert J. and Helen Moran Fenderson, she moved to Maine at an early age. She graduated in 1944 from Deering High School, Portland, and in 1948 from Nasson College, Springvale.
She was the executive secretary to the president of the Goodall Sanford Mills many years ago.
Mrs. Hobbs was a member since 1956 of Beta Sigma Phi, Portland and Sanford, a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Maine and Cumberland County teachers associations, the Maine Restaurant Association, Sanford Golf Club and the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Portland. She was also a member and director of the Wells Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed skiing, golf and travel. Active in the Maine Republican Party, she served in the past as a state convention delegate.
Surviving are her husband of 43 years of Wells Beach; her mother, Helen Valliere of Gorham; five sons, Daniel J. Hobbs of Portland, William M. Hobbs of Wells Beach, Stephen D. Hobbs of Falmouth Foreside, Robert D. Hobbs of Salem (ME) and James M. Hobbs of New York City; and three grandchildren.
