Helen Moran Valliere, formerly of 284 Danforth St., died Saturday at the Gorham House, the day after her 91st birthday.
She was born in Portland, the eldest of five children of Thomas H. and Elizabeth Culleton Moran, attended schools there and was a 1923 graduate of Portland High School.
When war was declared Dec. 8, 1941, she happened to be in Washington D.C. at a dinner party with Margaret Chase Smith, her husband's cousin. During World War II, she worked for the Department of Defense at a local shipyard.
For 25 years, she worked in the "Better Dresses" department at Porteous, Mitchell & Braun. Among her loyal customers was Bette Davis.
In 1925, she married Robert J. Fenderson. Her second husband, Lloyd R. Valliere, died in 1936. Her daughter, Hope Fenderson Hobbs, died in 1992.
Mrs. Valliere was a member of the First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church of Portland and of the Deering Chapter, OES.
Surviving are five grandsons, Daniel J. and Robert D. Hobbs, both of Portland, William M. Hobbs of Wells Beach, Stephen D. Hobbs of Falmouth Forreside and James M. Hobbs of New York City; and three great-grandchildren.
