Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schmidt of Grand Island received word from the war department that their son, second lieutenant Robert L. Schmidt was killed in action over France on August 11. He was a bombardier-navigator on a B-24 Liberator, 21 years old. (Photo in uniform published)
Lieut. Schmidt enlisted as an army air cadet February 12, 1943, received his wings and commission at the Midland Air Field, Midland, Texas and went overseas last June.
Born near Richland in Colfax County, Robert spent most of his boyhood days in Gage Valley, Howard county, graduated from Archer high school in Merrick County in 1940, and with his parents moved to Grand Island in 1942. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church.
He is survived by his parents, his fiancée, Miss Shirley Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Peterson of Hastings; a brother, Lieut, Arnold H. Schmidt, assigned to an army air force station at Homestead, Fla., and two sisters, Mrs. Rose Jacobsen 404 East Tenth St. Grand Island, and Mrs. Margaret Hessel, 322 East Tenth Street, Grand Island.

Memorial Funeral Services For Lieut Robert Schmidt -
Word was received this morning from Mrs. Rose Jacobson of Grand Island that the body of her brother, Robert Schmidt will arrive on May 18, and funeral services will be held at the Geddes Funeral Home in G. I. on Friday, May 20 at 2:30 p.m.
The body was recently brought back from Europe where Lieut. Schmidt lost his life during the war while serving on a bombing crew with the U.S. air forces.
