Woman Dies in Collision
One person was injured fatally and another critically in a near-head on collision of a car and semi-trailer truck Sunday in the Bonneville Tunnel of Interstate 80 about 42 miles east of Portland. Dead is Mrs. Myrtle L. Brown, 77, of 2615 SE Courtney Rd., Milwaukie. Her husband, Elmer A. Brown, 84, driver of the auto, was reported in critical condition at Providence Hospital with multiple injuries. Driver of the truck, Edward George, 45, of 1717 NE 117th St., Vancouver, was not injured.
Two other cars piled up in avoiding the first accident. There were no injuries in the second accident. The east-bound tractor-trailer rig and the west-bound auto struck glancingly as the truck driver swerved aside at the last instant, Multnomah County sheriff's deputies aid. The impact caught the drivers' sides of the fronts of both vehicles, demolishing the car and sending the truck across the west lane of the two-lane tunnel into a concrete wall.
Sheriff's deputies said the lights of the Brown car were not turned on and it appeared the driver became "disoriented" in the dim tunnel before the collision. They said a witness in one of the following cars reported the Brown auto also swerved before the crash, after the driver leaned forward and apparently turned on the windshield wipers, possibly thinking he had the headlight switch. The accident, occurring shortly after 2 p.m. about one-half mile east of where the four-lane interstate becomes two lanes, backed up up traffic for a mile or more both sides of the tunnel.

Funeral for Mrs. Elmer A. (Myrtle) Brown, 77, of 2615 SE Courtney St., Milwaukie, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Peake Memorial Chapel in Milwaukie. Vault entombment will be at Portland Memorial. Mrs. Brown died as a result of an automobile accident near Cascade Locks Feb. 16. She was born in Iowa and had lived in the Milwaukie area for several years. She was a past matron of the Temple Chapter, OES No. 140, and a past president of the 50-50 club in Milwaukie. She is survived by her husband and a sister, Bertha Hughes of Palo Alto, Calif.
