LEWISTOWN - Mildred S. (Gray) Ayers, 94, a retired teacher and former Denton resident, died of natural causes Tuesday at a local nursing home. Her funeral is 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Denton Community United Methodist Church, with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery. Creel Funeral Home is In charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Denton Ambulance Replacement Fund or to the donor's choice. Born Dec. 11, 1901, In Alpina, S.D., she moved to Montana at age 10 and graduated from Stanford High School. After earning a teaching certificate she taught in Everson and Denton for several years. She later moved to Washington, where she attended Cheney Normal School and taught for four years. In 1925 she married Irving Ayers in Washington, and they moved to the family ranch northeast of Denton. After her husband's death in 1949, she lived in Lewistown and Denton. In 1961 she earned a degree in elementary education from Western Montana College at Dillon, then taught fifth grade at Fort Benton for three years. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Past Matrons Club, American Legion Auxiliary and the Republican Party. She enjoyed traveling and the outdoors. Surviving are a daughter, Elaine Musick of Lewistown; two sons, Daryl Ayers and Wallace Ayers of Denton; a sister, Margaret Ogden of Chattaroy, Wash.; a brother, Russell Gray of Visaiia, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, a grandson and a great-granddaughter.
