Mary Lou's appendix ruptured and she was operated on, but after developing peritonitis she died five days later of pneumonia at the Sheltering Arms Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Records at the cemetery show she was buried in an unmarked grave February 11, 1924, she was 9 years old. G. W. Blileys Funeral Home was in charge of the burial however their records from 1924 were destroyed in a flood.
