Crystal is survived by her son, Randolph (Randy) M. Roane, Jr. and his wife, Marsha; her daughter, Denise Roxann Machamer; three granddaughters, Michelle Searfoss, Elaine Boyd, Alexandra Tess Davis; and great grandchildren.
Crystal was born in Richmond, Virginia but lived her childhood in Warwick County on a farm where Todd's Stadium now stands. She attended Morrison HIgh School (Warwick High School now). She moved to Cambridge, Maryland and later to Portsmouth, Virginia and lived most of her life in Wythe, Hampton, VIrginia. She never completed the 12th grade or learned to drive, but she was a voracious reader, learner, and a student of the Christian faith up until the past year. She served fifty years at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Hampton becoming a leader in her church, President of United Methodist Women, a Sunday School teacher, organizer of many unique programs also she earned the position as a Certified Lay Speaker giving many sermons.
Crystal was an artist with many talents and a photography colorist (before color film) at Parsons Studio on old Washington Ave., Newport News. Many local children had their "12 years" photos done by her. She worked various jobs well into her 80's, married a young man she knew as a child (Ranny) and wrote to him faithfully during his service in WWII leading to their marriage soon after his return. They raised two children and was a third parent to her granddaughters. She was a second grandma to many others.
Crystal was one of the most warm, giving, caring, independent, stubborn and inspirational people on earth and will be deeply missed.
