Sara Augusta Mallory was born to Charles A. and Martha Eliza Hanford Mallory in Aurora, Illinois on May 15, 1855. She went by the name Augusta and "Gussie." She had a younger brother, Charles E. Mallory, who was born in August 1857.

When Augusta was 6 years old, her father enlisted in the Union Army in October 1861. He was wounded and began receiving Invalid Military Benefits in 1871. The family moved to Marshalltown, Iowa sometime in the 1870s.

At the age of 24, Augusta married the young Dr. David Crawford Brockman on November 5, 1879. They settled in the town of Marengo, Iowa where Dr. David had his new medical practice. After having 3 children in 1883, 1887 and 1889, the family moved to Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa in 1892.

Augusta's parents, Charles and Martha Mallory, moved to Ottumwa with them and settled in the house next door. The family built an enclosed passageway between the two houses to facilitate the trips back and forth for visiting and care-taking duties.

Augusta had two more children in Ottumwa in 1892 and 1897. She suffered from a degenerative back condition for many years. Her mother died in 1899 and her father died in 1907.

At the age of 53, Augusta died on July 19, 1908. She left behind her husband and 5 children ranging in age from 11 to 25 years old.
