Ruth was the 5th and final child born to Dr. David and Augusta Mallory Brockman. Her family had moved from Marengo, Iowa south to Ottumwa, Iowa 5 years before she was born. Her father had helped to establish the first City Hospital in Ottumwa.

Ruth was 11 years old when her mother died in 1908. She lived with her older siblings in various homes around Iowa. On March 26, 1927 she married Carl Emerson Roy in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She had been living there with her older sister, Hilda, who was teaching at the Agricultural and Mechanical Arts College there in Stillwater.

Ruth and Carl moved to Folkston, George and bought a peach farm, where her sisters, Louise and Helen joined them. After Ruth died in 1937 at age 40, her sister, Louise stayed on to help Carl on the farm. Ruth was brought back to Ottumwa and was buried with the rest of her family.
