Charles A. Mallory was born to Charles and Henrietta Betts Mallory. He was descended from a long line of the Mallory and Seymour families who had first settled in the Connecticut area in the early 1600s.

His mother died in February 1833 when he was only 3-1/2 years old. His father was remarried to Sally Ann Scofield. The elder Charles Mallory died in 1867 in Connecticut.

Charles married Martha Eliza Hanford Mallory who was also born in Fairfield County, Connecticut. They immigrated west to Illinois, where they had their two children, Sara Augusta in 1855 and Charles E. in 1857.

Charles A. Mallory enlisted in the Union Army on October 15, 1861 when he was living in Aurora, Illinois. He was in Company A, of the Illinois 58th Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Full Quarter Master Sargent in 1862. He was wounded in the war and received Invalid Military benefits starting in 1871.

On future census records Charles A. was always listed as being an invalid and not working. He and Eliza lived with their son and his family in Marshalltown, Iowa until 1892, when they moved into a house next door to their daughter and her family in Ottumwa, Iowa. Their son-in-law, Dr. David Brockman, had an enclosed passageway built between the houses to facilitate the family going back and forth between the houses, no matter what the weather was.

Martha died in 1899 at age 67 and Charles A. Mallory died in 1907 at age 78.
