Minnie Etna Smith passed away at Converse County Memorial Hospital June 4 at the age of 91. She was one of 19 children born to John and Nancy Van Sickle. Her mother passed away when Minnie was three years old and she was raised by her stepmother. On June 20, 1892 she was united in marriage to Lewis Milford Smith at West Union, Iowa. To this union were born two children, Robert and Leta Rebecca. The family lived on a farm in West Union until 1905 when they moved to Milo, Missouri, residing there three years. They later moved to Guide Rock, Nebraska where they lived until 1918 when they settled on a homestead on Walker Creek, northeast of Douglas. Here they lived until 1936 when they moved to Douglas. Mrs. Smith leaves one son, Robert of Chadron, Neb.; 4 granddaughters, Elsie Amick of Chadron; Mary McKenzie of Albion, Neb.; Hazel Thomas of Fremont, and Gladys Eckley of Wahoo, Neb.; one grandson, Milford Smith, Long Tree, Neb.; 13 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Grace Sime, Arlington, Iowa and Lizzie Averill, Dundee, Iowa. Her daughter, Leta, passed away in 1923 and her husband in 1944. (Information was obtained from her obituary in the Douglas Budget June 11, 1964 and cemetery records.)
