Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Harwell passed away on Saturday (Sept 29, 2012) at her home with her son by her side.
Surviving is her son, Don B. Harwell of Ogdensburg; a grandson, Dylan E. Harwell of Denver, CO; a sister, The Rev. Dr. Ruth B. Fiscella of Oakland, CA; and nieces and nephews, Dr. Roxanne Fiscella of Berkley, CA, Dr. Ronald Fiscella and his wife Donna of Moline, IL, Fred Fiscella of Las Vegas, NV and Clark Fiscella & his wife Nan of Raleigh, NC.
She was predeceased by her parents Roy and Mae Bellinger; her husband, Joseph L. Harwell; a son, Lee W. Harwell; a brother, Bruce C. Bellinger; and a sister, Georgia Merkley.
Eleanor was born on Sept 3, 1914 in Macomb, a daughter of Roy and Mae (Bruce) Bellinger. She graduated from OFA in 1931 and the Potsdam Normal School in 1937. She married Joseph L. Harwell in 1945, and later earned a B.A. in Education from New York University and a M.S. from St. Lawrence University. Her teaching career spanned thirty-four years, mostly spent in New York State Schools.
During WWII, she worked as an assistant air traffic controller at the New York Airway Traffic Control Center at LaGuardia Airport for several years, and also became a licensed pilot on the Piper Cub plane.
Upon retiring from teaching, she spent ten years (2 terms) on the Ogdensburg Board of Education, and was also active in fighting the establishment of OTB parlors in St. Lawrence County. She was the eldest member of the First Baptist Church in Ogdensburg, and has remained active in the church for many years where she held many offices.
She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and the
Seve-Kat-Si Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (OAR).
