Don Bellinger Harwell, 61, died on Tuesday (10/13/2015) at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg.

He was born on 2/18/1954 in Ogdensburg, a son of Joseph and Eleanor Harwell. He graduated from the Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1972 and following his mother’s wishes he began his studies in accounting at Monroe College in Rochester, NY. After a month of college he could no longer ignore his true passion and moved to Sperry, Oklahoma where he graduated from the Oklahoma Farrier College. Don’s love for horses and his real-life cowboy swagger made him a perfect match for the Texas horse community where he built a successful business and became well known for his horse ranch and arena in Waxahachie. Don was an exceptional horse trainer and heavily involved in the horse show circuit, where he regularly won awards and accolades. His business took him all over the southwest and made him a reluctant local hero among his hometown friends and family. His career in Texas spanned 31 years and in 2007 he returned to Ogdensburg to care for his mother. Once back in Ogdensburg he continued to be involved in the local horse scene where he was a volunteer at the St. Lawrence Valley Horseman’s Association. Aside from horses, Don’s other passion was hockey. Beginning with the Montreal Canadiens and ending with the Dallas Stars, anyone who knew Don understood that nothing could come between him and his hockey game. Don also loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He spent this past summer camping, boating, and fishing on the St. Lawrence River. For those who knew him, Don will be greatly missed for his wise-guy sense of humor, his incredible work ethic, and his easygoing personality. Don was a real life wrangler who prided himself in downplaying his accomplishments but there wasn’t a person who met him that wasn’t touched by his kindness, selflessness, and big-hearted generosity.

He was survived by his nephew, Dylan Harwell, of Leadville, Colorado, and an aunt, the Rev. Dr. Ruth B. Fiscella of Oakland, California.
