Albert B. Merrill, Banker, Is Dead
Business and education leader Albert Bacon Merrill, who was once the country's youngest president of a major bank, died yesterday in St. Joseph's Hospital, Phoenix, Ariz., at the age of 71.
He was chairman of the board of directors of First Trust & Deposit Co. and chairman of the board of trustees of Syracuse University.
Mr. Merrill had been vacationing with his wife in Scottsdale, Ariz., since Feb. 1, and suffered a heart attack that hospitalized him last week. He lived on Marvelle Rd., Fayetteville.
A long banking career started in January, 1913, when Mr. Merrill joined the Trust & Deposit Co. of Onondaga, which became First Trust & Deposit Co. after a 1919 merger, as a bookkeeper.
He was successively clerk in the trust department, manager of the bond department, assistant secretary, treasurer and vice president. At the death of Carleton A. Chase, he was elected president in November, 1927, and was, at the age of 38, the youngest major bank president in the country. He held that position until December, 1956 when he was elected board chairman.
Mr. Merrill was born in Fabius, graduated from Syracuse Central High School in 1910, and attended Syracuse University. He was elected chairman of the university's board of trustees in June, 1953, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the university Oct. 7, 1955.
Wide business interests included his being a director of Couse-Hinds Co., the Netherland Co., Syracuse Hotel Corp., Syracuse Cold Storage Co., Oswego Falls Corp. and Syracuse Supply Co. For many years, he was chairman of the War Finance Committee of Federal District Four. He was formerly president of Syracuse General Hospital and from 1938 to 1940 of the Chamber of Commerce.
In 1948 and 1952, he served as an elector for the Republican Party representing the 35th Congressional District. He was named chairman of the Transit Study Committee in 1955 and also served as chairman of advance gifts for the Community Chest-Red Cross drive.
Mr. Merrill was a member of the East Genesee Presbyterian Church, the Century Club, Skaneateles Golf and Country

Surviving are his wife, the former Rena S. Wicks, two daughters, Mrs. John B. Hammeken and Mrs. Richard W. Russell of DeWitt, three brothers, Robert S. and Charles L. Merrill of Syracuse and William H. Merrill of Buffalo; a sister, Mrs. John Rowley of Liverpool, and five grandchildren.
Services will be a 2 p.m. Monday at Hendricks Chapel, Syracuse University, the Rev. Charles C. Noble officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dugald Chaffee. Burial will be in Onondaga Valley Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Garfield Funeral Home, 515 Westcott St., from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Friends desiring to do so may make contributions to the Syracuse University Library Associates.
