81y 10m 12da [Old cemetery records state this age, but he was actually about 20 years older. The 1830s are too late for him to be born to his mother, and he would not have been old enough to marry in 1843 if he had been b. in the 1830s as 'inscription' date attests he was.)
Mathias, or Matthew Johns was the second of 2 sons born to Henry Johns and Elizabeth Firestone.
The family lived in Tennessee until the early 1830s when they migrated to Hancock Co., Indiana.
Matthew married Ellen Maggard on 26 Apr 1843 (per Ancestry's Indiana Marriage Collection) or 23 April 1843 (per other sources) in Hancock County, Indiana. Their children included Henry (1844-1895, m. Sarah J. Coon), John W. (1845-1876), David (1847-1848), Mary Ann (1849-1930, m. Elisha Burris), Mariah Marie (1851-1894, m. Abram Burris), Louise (1853-aft 1879, m. William Slaughter), William Finley (1855-1897, m1 Mary L. Davis, m2 Nancy J. Noland), David Anderson (1857-1941, m1 Jane Jacobs, m2 Miss Burgess), Elizabeth Ellen (1860-1882, m. Charles Nibarger), Nancy E. (1862-aft 1893, m. Alexander Bridges), and Sarah Jane, died in infancy, 1865- 29 Nov 1867.
Matthew was a farmer and blacksmith and enjoyed a good reputation in the community. The family is found in the 1850 census in Brown Twp, Hancock, Indiana, listed as "Mathias" and "Helen" with son John and dau Mary Ann; Matthew is a farmer and has $1000 in real estate, and they are listed as the family after his father and mother, Henry and Elizabeth Johns. When Matthew's parents Henry and Elizabeth were older, they deeded their land to Matthew in exchange for him taking care of them for the rest of their lives, and that may be shown by the 1860 census entry which has Henry and Elizabeth in the previous dwelling.
The 1860 census notes Matthew has $4511 in real estate, and $882 (hard to read) in personal estate; Matthew is listed as being unable to read or write. In 1870 John and Ellen were living with their sons Wilson (probably William), (David) Anderson, dau Elizabeth and Nancy, and Mary Maggert, age 79, probably Ellen's mother as other censuses state the mother was b. VA. Matthew is listed as having real estate with a value of $8400 and personal estate value of $1000. In 1880 they were still in Brown Twp., Hancock, Indiana, with Matthew still listed as a farmer and living with his wife and dau Elizabeth and Nancy.
