Dixon is the son of John Edmond Turner and Rosalia Ann Ely. He had 10 siblings. Dixon completed four years of college. He worked at Texas A&M. He was an agricultural agent and later a public school teacher. He married Mary Anna Galley on 2/17/1918. They had three children: Shirley, Doris and Dixon Leland. Mary died in 1934 when the children were all very young. Later he remarried.
