Former Resident of Ellis County Dead
John Edmond Turner is Laid to Rest in Cemetery at Dimmitt

John Edmond Turner, a former resident of Ellis County, died recently at Dimmitt and was buried there, according to word received by Mrs. Jack Killabrew and Mrs. M.S. Payne, a sister and cousin of Mrs. Turner. Mr. Turner lived near Waxahachie at one time.

The Castro County News gives the following sketch:

Mr. Turner, familiarly known throughout this section as "Uncle John," was born in Kemper County, Mississippi, on August 23, 1854. In December, 1880, he married Miss Rosalie Ann Ely, in Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas, and to this happy union was born eleven children, eight girls and three boys, all living at this time.

On August 25, 1890, they moved to this section, at which time the entire territory was barren, and they lived for many weeks in a covered wagon, and for many years hauled supplies overland from Amarillo, the nearest trading point. During his early days here, Mr. Turner acquired considerable land, by hard work, diligent and honest effort suceeded [sic] in a great way in the early development of this section. Soon after his arrival here, he helped in the organization of Castro County, later serving as tax assessor for two terms, after which he retired from public life and devoted his life's work to the raising and educating of his family.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and for forty-two years a member and ardent worker in the Baptist Church, being a ordained deacon most of the time.

Besides his widow, surviving him are the following children, all of who were here for the funeral except one: Kenneth and John W. Turner, Mrs. W.T. Gollehon, Mrs. George Burch, Mrs. Oscar Ayres, Mrs. Claude Johnson, Mrs. Ester Noble, all of Castro County; Mrs. Clarence Williams, of Olton, Mrs. W.J. Slover, of Lubbock, Dixon L. Turner, of Granbury, and Mrs. Oscar Jones, of Hollene, N.M., the latter of whom was unable to attend the funeral. Besides the foregoing, the deceased leaves two brothers and one sister, and twenty-three grandchildren, to mourn a loss which is also felt over the entire County.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church in the city at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon being conducted by N.M. Gilbert, pastor of the Baptist Church, and Rev. B.F. Fronabarger, of Canyon.

Interment was made in the Dimmitt cemetery, and the esteem in which he was held was attested by the cessation of all business activities during the funeral hour, and the large cortege which accompanied the remains to their final resting place.
