Member of real estate firm of Simpson & Groves of K.C. MO.

2nd marriage to Elizabeth Osborne Doggett of MA.

JOHN G. GROVES IS DEAD

John G. Groves, long prominent socially and in business in Kansas City, died last night in Paris, shortly after reaching France on his customary summer vacation in Europe. A cable informing of his death was received here early today from the Hotel Maurice. Mr. Groves left Kansas City May 15th in excellent health and spirits, confident the two months ahead were to be as enjoyable as any he had spent on his frequent trips abroad. He sailed May 21 on the Bremen.

Mr. Groves was vice president of Groves Brothers & Co., one of the largest and most successful of the realtor firms engaged in the real estate, mortgage and insurance fields. Mr. Groves was born in Lafayette County, Oct. 12, 1865. The Groves were an old Missouri family who had originally come from Tennessee. A youth just out of Central College, Fayette, MO., he came to Kansas City in 1886 to join an elder brother in the real estate business of Simpson & Groves. The partners were Frank Simpson, who died in 1909 and Frank S. Groves. That firm was one of the real estate organizations that survived the boom years and subsequent deflation of the late 80's.

He was a widower, having married twice. His first wife was Miss Agnes Corle of Kansas City. He later married Mrs. Elizabeth Osborn Doggett of Boston. A step-daughter, Mrs. Sally Van Brunt Postell lives in Norfolk, VA. Mr. Groves lived in the Hyde Parke section in a residence he built many years ago at 3520 Warwick Boulevard. He was a director in the Commerce Trust Company, the Drovers National Bank and in the Kansas City Title and Trust Company. His clubs included the Kansas City Country Club, University Club, the Chicago Club, the Myopia Hunt Club of Hamilton, Mass., and the Beagle Club here. He long had been a member of St. Paul's Episcopal church.

Besides Frank S. Groves, two other brothers, Jesse L. Groves of Dover, Mo. and William G. Groves of Corder, MO., and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Plate, who lives now in California, survive. Five nephews live in Kansas City; R. Dinwiddie Gorves, J. Garner Groves III, John G. Groves II, Roscoe Groves and George O. Forrest. The funeral arrangements will be made upon the arrival of the casket from Paris.
