His surname is found as Linsly, Lindsly, Lindley or other variants. He was the son of John Lindley Sr. and he migrated to America with his parents between 1634 and 1639, depending on which source you read. By July 1646, he owned land in Branford, Connecticut. He married Susanna Cullpeper on 24 June 1655 in Branford, Connecticut. The family migrated to Newark, New Jersey in 1666 and in 1697, patents were given to him for tracts of land. Between 1699 and 1704, he deeded his land evenly over to his five sons.
Francis and his wife, Susanna, had 8 children. Three are not linked to them due to an unknown burial place and Ruth is linked with an incorrect maiden name. Data about these four is below:
1. Bethiah Lindley, born Mar 4, 1660 in Branford, CT. Married Ebenezer Canfield first and Benjamin Lyon Sr. second.
2. Benjamin Lindley, born circa 1670 in Newark, NJ. Married Mary Allen about 1697, by whom he had 6 children. He left a will in New Haven County, CT. in 1750.
3. Jonathan Lindley, born before 1680 in Newark, NJ. Married an unknown woman, by whom he had a son, Jonathan Jr. Gave the land, along with Benjamin Hathaway and perhaps his brother, John Lindley, for the parsonage and burial ground at the First Presbyterian Church at Morris Street and Park Place in Morristown, New Jersey. The church was originally a wooden building nearly square, with shingled sides. In 1774, due to the increased number of members, the building was enlarged. By 1790 plans for a new edifice were made due to a further increased membership and the hard usage to which the church was put during the Revolutionary War as a hospital for the army during the two winters that George Washington had his troops encamped there (1777 and 1779-1780).
4. Ruth Lindley was born on February 4, 1658 according to the Connecticut Births and Christenings 1649-1906 found at FamilySearch, which cites her father as "Franses Linsly". Ruth married first to Mr. Wheeler in about 1678, when Ruth was about 20 years old. Ruth married second to Matthew Williams Jr. in 1685 at about age 27. The confusion about her maiden name comes from this 1685 marriage record that correctly lists Ruth as Ruth Wheeler, since she was the widow of Mr. Wheeler. Nathan Wheeler did provide her gravestone and he was probably her son by her first marriage. Ruth's memorial number is #6621996.
