He married first to a woman, whose name is unknown, about 1692, and by whom he had at least two sons, John Lindley Jr., and Daniel Lindley. He removed from Newark, New Jersey to Hanover, New Jersey in Morris County in October 1721. He married second to Elizabeth Freeman, the widow of John Ford, sometime before August 1742; they had no children. He was a carpenter and wheelwright. His descendants later used LINDLEY as the common spelling of their surname. For more information about him refer to: Scott Sherpherd's "Who's Who in the Graveyard, The Presbyterian Church of Morristown, Interments of Record Dating From 1731", Morristown NJ, @2002, in which the author made use of church records and two earlier complications of inscriptions, one from 1931 and another from 1851.

The following was contributed in June of 2020 by Grant Sullivan (#47468245):
His first wife could possibly been Mary Riggs (1666 - 1701), daughter of Edward Riggs III (1636 - 1715) & Mary Munn (1640 -1688). There is no FindAGrave Memorial for Mary (nee Riggs). Note from manager of this memorial: Other research indicates that Mary Riggs was married instead to Joseph Lindsly/Lindley, John's brother.

John 1st wife was Mary Harrison Riggs, daughter of Edward Riggs IV and Mary Brown. She was b. 1662 and d. 1737 [note different date from paragraph above] & they had the following children listed below. The same problem exists as other sources say she was the wife of John's brother, Joseph, instead.
1. Daniel Lindsley B. 1700 D.1777
2. John Lindsley Jr. B. 1703 D. 1787
3. Joseph Lindsley B. 1707 D. 1786
4. Elizabeth Lindsley B. 1710 D. 1734 D.O.M. Bef. 1731 to Abraham Drake Jr. B. 1708 D. 1759. She Is my (Scott Drake) 7th Great Grand Mother
